Templars are... hm, so called guardians of the Chantry. They exist to "protect the weak!" and "hunt abominations!" and "guard mages!". ...Well. At least those who live in the Circle. You've no choice as a mage really, you either join or live in fear of templars knocking on your door.

A friend of mine got rather sick of the lack of action being taken to give mages free will and the power to choose their own destinies and took it upon himself to force the heads of power into action.... except it's just sparked all out war instead.

They weren't wrong, though... It's a good thing to stand up against that kind of thing.

It is. They asked me to pick a side and as much as I wasn't involved, they quite firmly decided as champion I was. And, like you, I thought the mages free will was far more important than keeping the order of things.

I doubt Kirkwall will appreciate that answer too much, however. Oh well, I suppose I won't worry about it until I've returned.
